Soil, Scraps and Startüp Life

Reducing food waste is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Learn
simple tips to save food, money, and the planet while making every meal count.

While most of NYC was planning cookouts, fireworks, and beach days, I spent my
Saturday morning at the Union Square Greenmarket, not as a shopper, but as a
volunteer with LES Ecology Center.

It’s part of my journey to earn my NYC Master Composter certificate and honestly, it
couldn’t feel more aligned with building a food sustainability platform like Flash Grüb.

How You Can Make an Impact (Low-Hanging Fruit Moves)

From helping folks sort their food scraps to answering compost questions and bagging
buckets of finished compost for plant lovers and city gardeners. The work was
grounded, literal, and real. And it reminded me why I care so deeply about this space.

Because food waste isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s an opportunity. An opportunity to educate, connect, and rebuild food systems. To turn waste into value for people and the planet.

And volunteering at the Green Market didn’t just feel good, it was humbling. People had
genuine questions. They showed up with bags of scraps and a willingness to learn. And
LES creates the space for that kind of transformation to happen, every single week.

Check out LES Ecology Center — they offer
amazing free resources, workshops, and yes, even a
free Master Composter Certificate Program for
NYC residents. Whether you’re a total beginner or a
soil nerd like me, it’s a great way to get involved.

So yes, while the city was out celebrating the long
weekend, I was learning, giving back, and getting
my hands (literally) dirty.

Because real change starts with showing up. Even
at 10AM. Even on a holiday weekend.

And that’s the energy we’re bringing into Flash Grüb, a food waste platform that’s not
just about tech or logistics, but about values. About waste turned resource. And about
building a system that works for people and the planet.

Stay tuned. Big things are growing 🌱
