Meet Qiulin Zhu, Columbia PhD Bio ‘26

Passionate about biology and building sustainable solutions, Qiulin Zhu is a Columbia PhD student making waves at Flash Grüb. This week, we’re shining a light on her journey and how she’s helping turn food waste into meaningful change. Let’s get into it. 🌱🔬💬

What made you want to intern at
Flash Grüb?

What made you want to intern at Flash Grüb?

Here is how food waste is impacting our city amid rat infestations:I was drawn to the scrappy, community-centered approach. As someone who cares deeply about both public health and systems change, the idea of intercepting food waste and turning it into access felt like a tangible, high-impact way to contribute.

How does working on FG fit into your Columbia journey or goals?

My Columbia experience has centered around using science and advocacy to drive real-world change. Flash Grüb allowed me to step outside the lab and work directly with communities—applying strategic thinking in a space that blends sustainability, equity, and innovation. It’s also pushed me to think more creatively and compassionately, which I believe is essential for any future path I take.

In one word, how would you describe Flash Grüb?

Impactful.
